In today's digital age, even the most intelligent individuals can fall victim to scams. Recently, I encountered someone who, despite being well-educated and computer-savvy, was duped out of a substantial amount of money through Telegram.
Yes, it's true. While casually watching videos on his mobile phone, he stumbled upon a Telegram channel that offered free trading services. Intrigued, he joined the group where several influencers boasted about earning hundreds of thousands of rupees daily. In this group of approximately 45 members, people were investing money and allegedly making profits of 15% to 20% on their investments. Initially, he invested 500 rupees and received 850 rupees in return. Encouraged by his success, he invested 5000 rupees the next day and within half an hour, his investment grew to 7600 rupees. He was ecstatic.
The trading seemed to be going exceptionally well, with everyone flaunting their earnings through screenshots in the group. Encouraged by messages urging him to invest more in the booming Nifty market, he transferred a whopping 2 lakh 38 thousand rupees and proudly shared the screenshot with the group. However, when he didn't receive any response for an hour, he tried contacting the admin, only to find the number switched off. Panic-stricken, he reached out to other members, but all their numbers were off too.
He had been swindled.
Fearing the worst, he lodged a complaint with the police, only to face a scolding for his foolishness. Humiliated and ashamed, he sought legal counsel, only to discover three days later that most of his money had already been withdrawn from his bank account. Only 54 thousand rupees remained, frozen by the police upon his request.
Now, legal proceedings are underway, but he holds little hope of recovering his lost funds.
This is becoming increasingly common nowadays.
I urge you all not to fall prey to any requests for money or OTPs in conversations, especially on Telegram. It has become a breeding ground for traps and scams. Stay vigilant, stay safe.
